Anyone who has been reading my blog knows that I love Negril’s 7 Mile Beach and pristine cliffs. It’s my favorite out of all of the best places to go in Jamaica.
In fact, I almost always recommend that people stay in Negril, but there are other parts of Jamaica that are just as beautiful, if not more beautiful than Negril (if you can believe that).
I don’t always recommend these places because it seems that many people who are traveling to Jamaica are either on a budget, or they want to go to the more popular areas where all of the activity is.
In any event, the following 5 locations are truly THE best places to go in Jamaica (and yes, Negril is one of them ;)):
- The Blue Lagoon in Portland
- Goldeneye in St. Mary
- Montego Bay
- Ocho Rios
The Blue Lagoon in Portland (Port Antonio)
The Blue Lagoon is quite beautiful, breathtaking really. It is located in Port Antonio, an often overlooked part of Jamaica. For those of you that may not know, this is where the iconic movie The Blue Lagoon with Brooke Shields was filmed.
You can stay in a cosy villa right along the turquoise blue water of the Caribbean Sea. Because it is a lagoon, you will be surrounded by lush trees from the nearby palm forests and have a wonderful view of the Blue Mountains, home of some of the best coffee you will taste in your life, the famous Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.
If the lagoon is not your thing, you could stay in a beach house along the Sand Sand beach in Portland. The Sand Sand beach is just on the other side of the Blue Lagoon, so even if you prefer to stay on the lagoon, you will have easy access to the beach as well – the best of both worlds.
This location is preferred by travelers who prefer a more secluded or private location. It is NEVER crowded.
Goldeneye in Oracabessa, St. Mary
Goldeneye is definitely my favorite among the best places to go in Jamaica. The word Goldeneye might make you think of the 1995 James Bond 007 flick with Pierce Brosnan. That is because Goldeneye in St. Mary is where it started. Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, fell in love with and purchased what is now the Goldeneye resort. This is where he wrote many of his movies.
The Goldeneye resort overlooks the Caribbean Sea, and is perched among tropical forests and rich green gardens. It is very romantic and charming, perfect for honeymoons.
There are 9 beach houses, 8 lagoon houses, and Fleming’s original villa, plus 4 more houses.
Because of its classy beauty and seclusion, Goldeneye is the favorite hideaway for many celebrities including Bill and Hilary Clinton, Johnny Depp, Beyonce and Jay Z, and of course Pierce Brosnan, just to name a few.
Besides its beauty and lively energy, another reason why I love Negril so much is the cliffs along the Seven Mile Beach. The rocky cliffs create many caves and diving areas, which makes it a very popular attraction among travelers. On any given day you can watch the locals (and tourists) put on a cliff diving show at the famous Rick’s Cafe.
There are a number of resorts and hotels along the 7 Mile Beach. If you are the “all inclusive” type of traveler, then you are sure to find something to suit your needs, as there are plenty of all inclusive resorts along the 7 Mile Beach. And if the cliffs sound more like your cup of tea, you won’t be disappointed with the choices of cliff resorts.
The Beach Boys sang about it in “Kokomo”. It was also one the favorite playgrounds of John F. Kennedy. It’s no wonder then that Montego Bay is sometimes referred to as the Jamaica tourism capital, as well as one of the best places to go in Jamaica.
Its beaches are comparable in beauty to Negril’s, although not as long as the 7 Mile Beach. Montego Bay also has two world class golf courses, Tryall and White Witch’s Rose Hall. They both overlook the beautiful shoreline.
Because of its beauty and romantic vibe, Montego Bay is often the city of choice for those who are getting married, going on a honeymoon, or simply looking for a romantic getaway.
Ocho Rios was the loation for Dr. No, which was the very first James Bond movie in 1962. It is also very popular among travelers, especially those wanting to get married or who are looking for the perfect honeymoon spot.
But Ocho Rios is most famous for the breathtaking Dunn’s River Falls and Dolphin’s Cove, where you can swim with the dolphins. One side note about Dunn’s River Falls…the Falls cascade directly into the ocean, but the beach at the base of the Falls is not the best beach in terms of beauty. However, it is pretty in its own right.
The beaches of Ocho Rios are beautiful, and there are also some pretty nice golf courses as well.
