Best Time to Go to Jamaica – Does it Really Matter When You Go?

A very common question I get asked all of the time is “When is the best time to go to Jamaica?”

Well, that depends.

In my opinion, there really isn’t a “bad” time to go. Even in the winter time, you will always find nice, warm weather in Jamaica.

Basically, there are three things that can help you decide when to go:

  1. Weather
  2. Crowds
  3. Cost

The Best Time to Go to Jamaica – December to April

The peak season, December to April, is definitely the best time to go to Jamaica in terms of weather and overall island vibes.

If you decide to go to Jamaica during the peak season, or “dry season”, (Dec-Apr), there are some things you will want to keep in mind:

1) First of all, the weather will be perfect at that time….an average of 85 degrees (Fahrenheit) during the day, and mid seventies at night.

2) There will be a lot of tourists on certain parts of the island, mainly the “Big Three”, Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios.

I personally think this livens up things and makes everything more fun…definitely the best time to go to Jamaica in my opinion. But I know there are those of you out there who would rather avoid the tourists ;).  In that case, you may want to avoid the “Big Three”, and head out to Portland or Oracabessa, St. Mary.

3) Also, due to the volume of visitors during that time frame, you may experience difficulty finding accommodations, and the ones you do find may be expensive…not too many deals during this time.

The key of course, is to pick your dates and book early…about 3 months in advance!

Best Off-Peak Time to Go to Jamaica

If you can stand the heat and humidity, summer is a good time to go to Jamaica.  And if you are planning a wedding or honeymoon during the summer months (June and July), you won’t have to worry about hurricanes. Since it is off-season, you can find some great deals too.

Also, October and November are great months to go to Jamaica.  Hurricane season will be over, and the peak season will not have started yet. There are many people that feel this is the best time to go to Jamaica due to the abundance of great hotel and airfare deals you can find.

Rain and Wind in Jamaica

The rainiest months in Jamaica are May through June, and September through October (an sometimes November too).  However, the rain in Jamaica comes in brief spurts – typical of tropical Caribbean climates. We don’t see days and days of rain like some of you may be accustomed to. And our rain is immediately followed by beautiful, warm sunshine.

Jamaica is not typically windy, although it can be quite breezy at times. If I had to classify a specific time of year as “windy” in Jamaica, I would choose the month of April. April can see some pretty strong gusts that may interfere with some of your outdoor activites, so be sure to plan your trip accordingly.

Can You Go to Jamaica During Hurricane Season (August-September)?

Of course, this my not the best time to go to Jamaica for some of you, but it’s not terrible either.

If you don’t mind frequent, short bouts of rain, you will be just fine.

Although Jamaica is located in the Caribbean hurricane belt, it really experiences little to no actual hurricanes. In fact, Jamaica has seen roughly 5 hurricanes over the course of the last fifty years. Because of this, many people do tend travel to Jamaica during hurricane season…they just make sure to purchase travel insurance just in case!
